Im Green Room im Kenwood House, London, befindet sich das Gemälde „Miss Murray“, welches zwischen 1825 und 1827 von Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) gemalt wurde. Das Gemälde, welches wir in dieser Auktion anbieten dürfen, ist knapp 35 Jahre später entstanden. Was ist passiert? Das vorliegende Gemälde entstand in einer Periode, in welcher Degas eine Anzahl von Gemälden schuf, welche auf bekannten Gemälden basierten. Solche Werke enstanden vornehmlich in den 1860er Jahren. So traf Degas zum ersten Mal auf Edouard Manet (1832-1883), als beide 1860 Kopien nach Diego Velazquezs (1599-1660) „Infanta Margarita“ radierten. Das hiesige Thema stellt ein Mädchen in ihrem Tanzkostüm dar. (Lawrence portraitierte seinerzeit Louisa Georgina Murray (1822-1891) und nahm damit eine Werkgruppe im Schaffen des Degas vorweg, welche von großer Wichtigkeit werden sollte. (†)
