Further information on this artwork

Pair of life-size bacchant busts
Height: 84 cm each.
Italy, 17th/ 18th century.

Terracotta, primed and painted in soft colours. Life-size busts of the mythological creatures of Bacchus and his companion Ariadne. Both busts with youthful faces and a wreath with foliage and grapes and ivy respectively. This addresses the importance of the Bacchus and Dionysus cult. Both busts with a cloth draped around their shoulders, overall hinting at the similarity with Caesar busts. The square base is drawn- in and decorated with a foliage frieze.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
