Im Jahr 1906 zog Tobey von Centerville nach Chicago, studierte dort am Art Institute und war ab 1911 als selbstständiger Modezeichner in New York tätig. Sein Werk wurde, bedingt durch seine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit Schriften der ostasiatischen Philosophie und arabischen Literatur, stark von deren Duktus beeinflusst. Ab 1918 konvertierte er zum Bahai-Glauben, der sein Werk nachhaltig prägte. Insbesondere unter den Einflüssen der fernöstlichen Kunst entwickelte der bedeutende amerikanische Maler seine berühmten „White Drawings“, die zu Beginn noch leicht gegenständlich sind und zunehmend abstrakter werden. Heute zählt er zu den Wegbereitern des abstrakten Expressionismus. (1061751) (14)

This famous American artist was particularly influenced by Far Eastern art when developing his famous “White Writing”. These were initially of a slightly figurative design and then became increasingly abstract. Today he is regarded as one of the forerunners of Abstract Expressionism.
