Italienischer Vertreter des abstrakten Expressionismus, Hauptvertreter der italienischen Informel-Malerei der 50er und frühen 60er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seit den 40er Jahren Mitglied verschiedener Künstlergruppen, unter anderem der Corrente (1942), "Fronte Nuovo delle Arti" und "Gruppo degli Otto" (1952). Der Künstler erhielt 1960 den Großen Preis der Biennale von Venedig und war mehrfach Teilnehmer der Documenta in Kassel.
