Bronze, braun patiniert. Die vollplastische Aktdarstellung eines jungen Mädchens in hockender Haltung zeigt sich lächelnd während sie sich einen Blumenkranz auf ihr Haupt legt. Das Haar fließt in schönen Wellen über ihre Schultern. Die stark bewegte Figur ist naturalistisch aufgefasst. Der achteckige Sockel ist mit gekehltem Randprofil ausgeführt. Bei der Bronze handelt es sich um einen seltenen Probeguss einer Auflage aus der Werkstatt des Künstlers um 1870.
Carpeaux war einer der bedeutensten Bildhauer Frankreichs im 19. Jahrhundert, der die École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris besuchte und dort Schüler von Francisque Joseph Duret (1804-1865) und François Rude (1784-1855) war. Bereits 27-jährig wurde er mit dem Prix de Rome ausgezeichnet, was ihm eine Studienreise nach Italien ermöglichte. Während der Regierungszeit Napoleons III durfte er den Flora-Pavillon des Louvre ausschmücken. Als eines seiner Hauptwerke gilt die sehr lebendige, einem pathetischen Realismus verpflichtete Figurengruppe „La Danse“ an der Fassade der Oper in Paris. Der Künstler hat auch bedeutende Schüler hervorgebracht wie Jules Dalou (1838-1902) oder Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931). (1370413) (19)
