Das Gemälde ist großformatig angelegt und führt den Betrachter an einen mit weißem Tuch gedeckten Tisch, auf dem zwei Teller aufgelegt sind. Davor höfisches Besteck neben Schälchen, einer angeschnittenen Zitrone sowie einem Flötenglas im Hintergrund zwischen Brotstücken und einem Tafelaufsatz. In besonderer Raffinesse hat der Maler den rechts stehenden Krug wiedergegeben, offensichtlich in Silber getrieben, mit Henkel und Deckel, der jedoch in Art eines Bartmannkruges gestaltet ist und – wie lebend – auf den Betrachter blickt.
Anmerkung:
In der Kunstwissenschaft wurden die Hände der verschiedenen Meister dieser Schule noch nicht eindeutig geschieden. Während in der Zeit des 30-jährigen Krieges etliche Maler wie Lucas van Valkenburgh (um 1535 – 1597) nach Frankfurt zogen, kam der Begründer der Hanauer Schule, Daniel Soreau (gest. 1619) nach Hanau. Dessen Schüler waren wiederum Sebastian Stoskopf (1597 – 1657) sowie dessen Söhne Peter und Isaak. Weitere bekannte Maler dieses Stilllebengenres waren Georg Flegel (1566 – 1638), Franz Godin (um 1590 – um 1624/3 1) oder Peter Binoit (tätig 1621 – 1632). Ohne Zweifel zeigt das vorliegende Stillleben hohe Malqualität und eine gut überlegte meisterhafte Komposition.
