Das vorliegende Gemälde stammt aus der Zeit zwischen 1515 und 1550, in der die bolognesische Malerei unter starkem Einfluss Raffaels (1483-1520) stand, nachdem sein Altarbild „Die Verzückung der Heiligen Cäcilie“ die Stadt erreicht hatte (heute Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna). Diese bedeutende Verbindung sah ihre Hauptvertreter in Personen wie Giacomo Francia, Innocenzo Francucci da Imola (1490-um 1545), Bartolomeo Ramenghi il Bagnacavallo (1485-1542) und Biagio Pupini dalle Lame (1511-1575), wobei Letzterer durch einen originellen Klassizismus besticht, mit dem das vorliegende Gemälde die auffälligsten Berührungspunkte zeigt. Als möglicher Schüler von Francesco Francia (um 1447-1517) war Pupini Freund und Begleiter von Bagnacavallo und Girolamo da Carpi (1501-1556), an deren malerischen Aktivitäten er teilnahm. Die Tafel zeigt klare stilistische Ähnlichkeiten mit vielen Werken des Künstlers, wie die „Madonna mit Kind und vier Heiligen“ aus der Pinacoteca in Bologna, die „Madonna mit Kind, Johannesknaben und Heiligen“ aus der Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore sowie die „Heilige Ursula und Begleiterinnen“ in der Basilica of San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna. The painting offered in this lot was created between 1515 and 1550, a time when Bolognese painting was strongly influenced by Raphael following the arrival in the city of his altarpiece The Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia (today held at Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna).
Pupini is believed to have studied with Francesco Francia (c. 1447-1517) and was a friend and companion of Bartolomeo I Ramenghi il Bagnacavallo (1485-1542) and Girolamo da Carpi (1501-1556) and he collaborated on their paintings.
The panel shows distinct stylistic similarities with many other works by Pupini such as Madonna and Child with four Saints at the Pinacoteca in Bologna, Madonna and Child with Young Saint John the Baptist and Saints at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and Saint Ursula and Companions at Basilica of San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna.
