BATTLE OF THE OLD ARMIES WITH TWO SOLDIERS FIGHTING ON A BRIDGE

Oil on canvas.
212 x 167 cm.

This impressive painting is of high historic and artistic interest. It stands at an ideal crossing point between extremely Mannerist influences and the important technical and poetical innovations that marked Italian Art in the first decades of the 17th century: from the naturalistic influences in the style of Caravaggio (1592-1610 ) to increasing proto-Baroque tendencies that are here blended into a very idiomatic artistic language.
The unique canvas painting for sale in this lot can certainly be brought in line with the Lombardic School of the first half of the 17th century and its leading exponent Giulio Cesare Procaccini. The magnificent composition, the complexity of the postures, theatrics of the gestures and eloquent facial expressions are further evidence of this. The connection with Procaccini is supported by many important works that the artist created in the last decades such as Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew at the Santo Stefano Church in Genoa, the Ecce Homo at the Museum of Art in Dallas, Judith and Holofernes at the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco in Milan and especially two versions of Cain and Abel held at the Galleria Arcivescovile in Milan and the Galleria dell‘Accademia Albertina in Turin respectively.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
