SAINT FRANCIS AS BENEFACTOR
Oil on panel.
51 x 29.5 cm.
The beautiful panel painting is a typical example of figurative painting in Umbria and Latium at the turn of the 16th century. The attribution is underpinned by a comparison with other works that have been confirmed to be by Il Pastura himself such as Saints Romanus and Ptolemy in the Cathedral of Nepi; the two side wings of the triptych in the Church of Santa Maria, Capranica; the paintings Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian as Benefactors and finally the painting Saint Roch as Benefactor in the Church of St Angelo, Viterbo. There are very clear analogies in terms of composition and body posture between the aforementioned figures and the present depiction of Saint Francis.
