Die vorliegende kleine Tafel zeigt Christus im Brustbildnis als Schmerzensmann vor dem Kreuz und neutralem Hintergrund. Das Gemälde ist Jonathan K. Nelson zufolge (1992, S. 186f.) die zentrale Tafel der Predella zu der Anbetung der Könige, die sich in den Uffizien, Florenz, befindet. Der Hochaltar wurde 1496 vollendet, zeigt Mitglieder der Familie Medici und entstand im Auftrag der Augustiner von San Donato e Scopeto.
Filippino Lippi war der Sohn des Fra Filippo Lippi (1406 - 1469), bei dem er auch bis zu dessen Tod Malerei lernte. Unmittelbar vor dem Hochaltar für San Donato e Scopeto hatte Filippino die Fresken in der Carfara-Kapelle von Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rom geschaffen. Doch blieb er im Anschluss seinem Hauptauftraggeber Lorenzo il Magnifico und damit der Stadt Florenz verpflichtet.

Artist’s name and label of Sir Augustus Wall Calcott, a previous owner, on the reverse.

According to Jonathan Nelson (1992, p.186) the painting is the central panel for the predella of The Adoration of the Magi in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. This high altar, completed in 1496, shows members of the Medici family and was created by order of the Augustinian convent of San Donato at Scopeto.

In 1988, when Alessandro Cecchi published his essay “Una predella e altri contributi per l’Adorazione dei Magi di Filippino” regarding the original appearance of the altar, he was not aware of the existence of the present painting and referred to a workshop copy instead of the original.
