1520 Antwerp - 1567, attributed

THE VIRGIN AND CHRIST CHILD

Oil on panel.
31 x 23 cm.

Cornelis was the son and student of the great Joos van Cleve, whose style and compositional details he adopted and whose softness and quiet elegance he refined. Cornelis reviewed his father’s style in his late works by orientating himself towards the more modern manner of representation of Pieter Aertsen. As can be seen in this beautiful work on panel, Cornelis’ painting using warm, luminous colours is very precise, and displays a seemingly classic, formal clarity. His obvious preference for sfumato indicates the influence of the Italian Renaissance painters, from Leonardo and Raphael through to Andrea del Sarto. The present work resembles other historically-documented masterpieces by van Cleve, particularly the depictions of The Virgin and Child held at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin and the Johnson Collection in Philadelphia. The present work is similar to both of these works, not only stylistically and in character but also in its dating as it was also created in 1540s, several years after his father’s death.
