Das Gemälde wohl auf ein Vorbild von Marten de Vos (1532-1603) zurückgehend, das als 1580 entstandener Kupferstich Verbreitung fand.
Der in bergiger Landschaft auf einer Anhöhe stehende bärtige Abraham mit rotem Mantelüberwurf hat gerade ein großes Schwert erhoben, um seinen seitlich vor ihm knienden Sohn Isaak auf Geheiß Gottes zu töten. Durch einen großen fliegenden Engel in bewegtem gelb-goldenen Gewand wird er gerade noch von seinem Vorhaben abgehalten. Nach rechts fällt der Blick in ein Tal mit Häusern, nach links in einen Wald, in dem ein Widder zu erkennen ist, den er schließlich anstelle seines Sohnes opfert. (1390815) (18)
