Aus dem abgedunkelten Vordergrund erheben sich Türme und Mauern einer Stadt aus dem Wolkenrauch der Kanonenschüsse. Am mächtigen Stadttorturm hat sich die Artillerie auf der Brücke positioniert und feuert nach rechts gegen die herandrängenden Reiter. Dazwischen der Wassergraben, in den bereits einige Soldaten gestürzt sind bzw. ein Reiter zu fliehen sucht. Die Stadtsilhouette zeigt zwischen dunklem Kanonenrauch und hellen Wolken im Spätlicht zahlreiche Türme, Zinnen, Bastion- und Kathedralturm. Rechts die Ruine eines bereits brennenden Hauses, links ist im Schutz des Turms der Nachschub aus der Stadt zu sehen mit einem Feldherrn auf einem Schimmel, über dem Torturm eine rote Fahne, darüber gebauschter, drohender Wolkenhimmel.
