In sich zusammengesackt und von vier langen Pfeilen getroffen und teils durchbohrt, hängt der Körper Sebastians in Folge seines Martyriums in glaubhaft schmerzhafter Weise an einem Baum, dessen Stamm und dessen Verästelung den Hintergrund des Bildes bilden und diesen gleichsam mit ihrem Blattwerk verdunkeln. Zwei Stricke halten ein Handgelenk und einen Oberarm des ehemaligen römischen Soldaten (gest. um 288). Diese außergewöhnliche und sehr mutige Komposition geht zurück auf ein Gemälde von Gerard Honthorst, welches GvHonthorst fe. signiert ist, 101 x 117 cm misst, um 1623 entstanden ist und heute in der National Gallery in London unter Inv.Nr. 4503 verwahrt wird. Eine als Werkstattarbeit anerkannte Wiederholung des Themas (101 x 118 cm) ist im Centraal Museum in Utrecht (Inv.Nr. 31722 als Leihgabe aus Privatbesitz) zu bestaunen. Horizontaler Spalt. Besch.
