Auf einer Waldlichtung eingebettet in einer hügeligen Landschaft steht der predigende Johannes der Täufer umgeben von zahlreichen Figuren, die den Blick links in ein lichtblaues Tal eröffnen, in dem ein Kirchturm die Brücke von der zeitgenössisch dargestellten Kirche zur biblischen Erzählung schlägt. Eine Predigtszene von Vinckboons wird beim RKD unter Nummer 2824 verzeichnet, ist in ihrer Darstellung jedoch weniger vielfältig als das hier angebotene Gemälde.
