Pastorale Themen waren dem Geschmack der Zeit entsprechend und so treffen wir Hirten und Hirtinnen nicht nur als Staffagefiguren in weiträumigen Landschaften des 17. Jahrhunderts an, sondern auch als Einzelfiguren, die wie hier allegorische Funktion haben. So mögen die beiden jungen Tauben als Hinweis auf die Frucht der Liebe gelten, die hier durch die leicht entblößten Brüste der Hirtin provoziert werden soll. Das Gemälde von Gerrit van Honthorst, welches sich 1652 datiert ist, befindet sich Centraal Museum, Utrecht.
