Monvaerni Master (1461 – 1485)
THE NATIVITY19.5 x 21.7 cm.
On the reverse collection and auction lables.
Limoges, ca. 1480.
Copper with enamel décor and gilt highlights. This well-preserved enamel plaque is one of ca. 50 known enamel works that can be attributed to the Limoges artist known under the pseudonym Monvaerni Master. He probably also worked as an illuminator of manuscripts and based his illustrations mainly on woodcuts by German masters, which were created around 1460 and printed in Lyon between 1482 and 1485. There is also an unmistakable resemblance with Flemish and French paintings and manuscripts. The quality of the work on offer for sale here presents a link between the Gothic and Renaissance style in Limoges’ enamel art. There is only one known similar local enamel work originating from the collection of Prince Adam Czartoryski and held at the Warsaw Museum. With minimal restoration and damaged. (†)
