Das Gemälde zeigt in einem Innenraum, von dem rechtsseitig eine Säulenbasis zu erkennen ist, das Halbbildnis einer jungen Frau mit drei Kleinkindern, von denen sie einem ihre rechte Brust gibt, während ein anderes nach ihrer linken Brust greift. Vor ihr sitzend das dritte Kind, das sich weinend die Augen reibt. Malerei in zurückhaltender Farbgebung, wobei die dramatische Hell-/Dunkel-Lichtführung unter dem Einfluss von Caravaggio geschaffen wurde. Das schwere Kolorit sowie der malerische Duktus sprechen für eine Einordnung in das Frühwerk des Künstlers. Das Thema selbst wiederholt er im Laufe seines späteren Schaffens, Details der Darstellung variierend. (1271447) (3) (18)
