Bei dem ersten Gemälde mit der Ansicht mit dem Bucintoro ist die Komposition von einer Zeichnung von Canaletto inspiriert, die später für das Gemälde in der Sammlung Bellesi verwendet wurde, die sich 1940 in London befand, und dann noch einmal in einer autographen Version, die im Museu Nacional d‘Art de Catalunya in Barcelona aufbewahrt wird (Inv. Nr. 77, als Depositum des Thyssen-Bornemisza-Museums), datiert 1745-1750. Die Form und die Position der Wolken am Himmel sind von dem Bellesi-Gemälde inspiriert, ebenso die Staffage und die Gondeln, aber die Komposition hat ein größeres Raumgefühl, dank des etwas breiteren Kanals und des größeren Atems zwischen den Booten. Die Szene illustriert die Atmosphäre, die den Markushafen am Himmelfahrtstag während der Feierlichkeiten zum Sieg Venedigs über die dalmatinischen Piraten im Jahr 998 erfüllt hatte. Zur Erinnerung an dieses Ereignis kleidete sich die Republik in aller Pracht, um ihre „Hochzeit an der Adria“ zu feiern. Um den Bund zu symbolisieren, bestieg der Doge sein offizielles Boot, die „Bucintoro“, und segelte aus der Lagune hinaus auf das offene Meer, wo er einen Ring ins Wasser warf. Während eine Vielzahl von Menschen und Booten die goldene Galeere zurück zum Kai begrüßen, fällt der Bick auf die Stadt mit dem Dogenpalast, dem ‚Campanile‘, der Marciana Bibliothek, bis hin zur Punta della Dogana und der Kirche Santa Maria de la Salute.

Was das zweite Gemälde betrifft, so ist es ebenfalls von einer Zeichnung aus der Bellesi-Sammlung inspiriert und wurde dann auf einer Leinwand von Canaletto in der Albertini-Sammlung in Rom wiederverwendet. Im Vergleich zu diesem Prototyp unterscheidet sich James‘ Leinwand in der Staffage, im Blickwinkel, der hier den Glockenturm von San Giorgio einschließt, und auch in den Markisen und Vorhängen, die sich rechts am Kai befinden. Beide Gemälde in qualitätvollster, präziser Manier mit zahlreichen Figuren und genauen Details, in überwiegend weicher Farbgebung, die prunkvoll ausgestattete, venezianische goldene Barke des Dogen hierbei besonders hervorgehoben. William James wurde als im 18. Jahrhundert in England tätiger Künstler für eine Gruppe von Gemälden identifiziert, die alle derselben Hand zuzuschrieben sind. Die qualitätvollen Arbeiten stehen stark unter dem Einfluss des großen italienischen Vedutisten Canaletto.

The composition of the first painting showing a view with the “Bucintaur” state barge is inspired by a drawing by Canaletto, later used for a painting held in the Bellesi Collection, which was located in London in 1940 and then again in a signed version held at Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona (inv. no. 77, on loan by the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum), dated 1745–1750. The shape and position of the clouds in the sky are inspired by the Bellesi-painting, as are the figural staffage and gondolas, however, the composition has a greater sense of space. The scene illustrates the atmosphere on Saint Mark’s square on Ascension Day, during the celebrations of Venice’s victory over the Dalmatian Pirates in 998. In commemoration of the event the Republic presented itself in all its splendour to celebrate the “Marriage of the Sea” ceremony. To symbolise Venice’s maritime dominion the Doge would board his state barge, the “Bucintaur” and sail out of the lagoon into the open seas, where he would drop a ring into the sea.

The second painting is also inspired by a drawing from the Bellesi Collection, which was re-used by Canaletto for a canvas painting held at the Albertini Collection in Rome. Both paintings are of high-quality, executed precisely, with numerous figures and exact details in predominantly soft colours, with the luxuriant and gilt Venetian barge of the Doge standing out especially.
