William James,
active 1730 - 1780, attributed

A pair of paintings
VIEW OF THE DOGE PALACE WITH STATE BARGE BUCINTAUR RETURNING TO THE PIER ON ASCENSION DAy
and
THE CANAL BANK TOWARDS THE PIAZETTA AND THE PUNTA DELLA DOGANA
Oil on canvas.
76.3 x 127.5 cm each.

The composition of the first painting showing a view with the “Bucintaur” state barge is inspired by a drawing by Canaletto, later used for a painting held in the Bellesi Collection, which was located in London in 1940 and then again in a signed version held at Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona (inv. no. 77, on loan by the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum), dated 1745–1750. The shape and position of the clouds in the sky are inspired by the Bellesi-painting, as are the figural staffage and gondolas, however, the composition has a greater sense of space. The scene illustrates the atmosphere on Saint Mark’s square on Ascension Day, during the celebrations of Venice’s victory over the Dalmatian Pirates in 998. In commemoration of the event the Republic presented itself in all its splendour to celebrate the “Marriage of the Sea” ceremony. To symbolise Venice’s maritime dominion the Doge would board his state barge, the “Bucintaur” and sail out of the lagoon into the open seas, where he would drop a ring into the sea.

The second painting is also inspired by a drawing from the Bellesi Collection, which was re-used by Canaletto for a canvas painting held at the Albertini Collection in Rome. Both paintings are of high-quality, executed precisely, with numerous figures and exact details in predominantly soft colours, with the luxuriant and gilt Venetian barge of the Doge standing out especially.

Notes:
William James has been identified as an talented artist active in England in the 18th century for a group of paintings all attributed to the same hand. The high-quality works are strongly influenced by the grand Italian vedutist Canaletto. (†)
