(1111331) (11)
Mattia Preti,
1613 Taverna/ Catanzaro - 1699 Valletta/ Malta, workshop
The artist was born in Calibri and initially trained with Giovanni Battista Caracciolo in Naples. In 1630 he relocated to Rome, where he came into contact with the Caravaggisti. He created the frescoes for Sant'Andrea della Valle there.
THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA
Oil on canvas. Relined.
175 x 128 cm.
Preti relocated to Malta in 1659 where he was active most of his life. Hence many of his most famous altar paintings, as well as the initial version of the painting on offer for sale in this lot are found there. It is conceivable that all of his workshop copies on this small island were probably created by his closest workshop assistants under his guidance, so that at least three versions of this subject can be found on Malta: at the Saint Helen's Basilica in Birkirkara, in Zejtun but also at the Basilica of Saint Catherine in Pedara/ Catania in Sicily.
