Cottingham gehört zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern des Fotorealismus. Nach seiner Ausbildung am Pratt Institute in Brooklyn arbeitete er zunächst als Grafikdesigner, bevor er sich, inspiriert durch die städtischen Landschaften Südkaliforniens, der Malerei zuwandte.
