In dieser zärtlichen Darstellung von Maria und Joseph in Anbetung des Christkindes erkennt man die Art und Weise des größten, im 16. Jahrhundert in Ravenna tätigen Künstlers Luca Longhi, Inhaber einer erfolgreichen und wachsenden Werkstatt, deren Aktivitäten bis zur Schwelle des 17. Jahrhunderts reichen. Als Schüler Francesco Zaganellis (um 1470-1532), aber besonders unter Einfluss von Marco Palmezzano (1458-1539) und Raffael (1483-1520) (vermittels Innocenzo da Imola) erarbeitete sich Longhi schnell seinen eigenen außergewöhnlichen Stil, der durch eine einfache und archaische Anmut besticht und oft als puristisch bezeichnet wurde. Die vorliegende "Heilige Familie" lehnt sich an viele Luca Longhi sicher zugeschriebene Werke an, die zwischen dem vierten und sechsten Jahrzehnt entstanden, wie "Die Geburt Christi" der Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Ravenna, "Die mystische Heirat der Heiligen Katharina" der Pinacoteca Comunale in Faenza oder "Die Anbetung der Hirten" aus dem Museo d'Arte della Città di Ravenna. This tender depiction of the Virgin and Joseph in Adoration of the Christ Child shows the style of Luca Longhi, the greatest artist active in Ravenna during the 16th century.
He had a successful and expanding workshop, which continued to be active to the turn of the 17th century. He was a student of Francesco Zaganelli (ca. 1470 - 1532), but was also especially influenced by Marco Palmezzano (1458 - 1539) and Raphael (1483 - 1520). By means of Innocenzo da Imola , Longhi quickly developed his own exceptional style, which has often been described as puristic and impresses with its simple archaic elegance.
The Holy Family is stylistically in keeping with many other works that have reliably been attributed Longhi and were created between 1540 and 1570 such as The Nativity held at the der Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Ravenna, The Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine at the Pinacoteca Comunale in Faenza or The Adoration of the Shepherds at the Museo d'Arte della Città di Ravenna.
