Dargestellt ist eine junge Frau im Halbbildnis, die sich auf eine Steinbrüstung lehnt und nach links unten blickt, eine rote Rose in der Hand, Perlenketten am Handgelenk. Über dem zurückfrisierten Haar eine kleine Kappe, von der ein Schleier zum Rücken herabzieht. Die Kleidung wie auch die Stoffdraperie im Hintergrund vorwiegend in Brauntönen gehalten, was - zusammen mit der effektvollen Lichtwirkung auf Gesicht und Busen der Dargestellten - auf den Stileinfluss Rembrandts verweisen soll, unter dem Ferdinand Bol auch stand. Vom genannten Maler sind mehrere Fassungen dieses Sujets bekannt, Wiederholungen mit nur geringen Abweichungen, wie etwa in der Eremitage in Sankt Peterburg, einer deutschen Privatsammlung sowie einer Sammlung in Liechtenstein. Das vorliegende Bild ist eine weitere Variation des Vorbildes. Die Dargestellte ist in den genannten anderen Sammlungen verschieden als "Prinzessin von Nassau-Siegen", "Herzogin Ernestine, Tochter des Prinzen Lamoral" bezeichnet worden.

It is known Ferdinand Bol painted several variants of this subject. Versions distinguished by very minor differences are held in The Hermitage in St Petersburg, a German private collection and a collection in Liechtenstein. The offered lot is another variant of this model. The sitter has been variously identified in other collections as Princess of Nassau-Siegen and Duchess Ernestine, daughter of the Prince Lamoral.
