Das Bild trägt entlang des Thronsockels die schwer lesbare Inschrift „1433“ und den Familiennamen der Auftraggeber „FRANCHIS“.
Dieses interessante, schöne Tafelgemälde wurde bei seiner Entdeckung der Venezianischen Schule (Ende des 14. und Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts) zugeschrieben. Man dachte hier an das Umfeld von Jacobello di Bonomo. Dies erwies sich jedoch schon bald als Irrtum, da weder die Daten, noch der Stil in diese geographische Zuordnung passten. Sehr viel wahrscheinlicher stammt dieses Werk von einem toskanischen Künstler um die Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts. Bei diesem Werk erkennt man das Verschmelzen verschiedener Malkulturen: neben spätgotischen Elementen sieht man hier durch die Nähe zu Florenz und Siena erste Renaissance-Anklänge (in einem gewagten Mix aus Lorenzo Monaco und Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, Taddeo di Bartolo, Sassetta, Masolino und Gentile da Fabriano, Gherardo di Starnina und Battista di Gerio) sowie Spuren des spanischen Darstellungsstils. Daraus ergab sich die Vermutung, es könnte sich hier um ein Werk des Portugiesen Alvaro Pirez de Evora, der laut Vasari zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts die Werkstätten von Taddeo di Bartolo in Siena frequentierte und später als Maler in der Toskana (zwischen Pisa, Volterra und Lucca) um 1420 und 1440 tätig war, handeln.
Das hier vorliegende Gemälde zeigt deutliche Ähnlichkeit mit bekannten Werken von Pirez. Die Darstellung der Madonna mit dem Kind, das sie auf ihren Knien hält erinnert an das „Triptychon“ (datiert 1423), das heute in der Pinakothek von Volterra zu sehen ist und an die Holztafeln mit der „Madonna col Bambino in trono e angeli“, die im Museum von San Matteo und in der Kirche Santa Croce in Fossabanda in Pisa zu sehen sind. Der dargestellte Johannes der Täufer ähnelt dem des Triptychons von Volterra und dem des tragbaren Flügelaltars im Herzog Anton Ulrich Museums in Braunschweig (einem Spätwerk von Pirez, signiert, 1434), während das Gesicht der Heiligen Elena an die Madonna in der Pinakothek von Cagliari erinnert.
Das hier vorliegende Werk entstand ein Jahr vor dem Triptychon von Braunschweig und war aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach als Altarflügel für die Privatkapelle einer Adelsfamilie gedacht. Der Künstler bemühte sich hier um eine Perspektive, die ebenfalls gut zum Spätwerk von Pirez passt. (1021602) (21)

The painting inscribed with barely legible date “1433“ on the painted base of the throne and the name of the commissioning family “FRANCHIS”.
When this interesting and beautiful painting was discovered it was attributed to the late 14th/early 15th century Venetian School and more specifically the circle of Jacobello di Bonomo. This was soon revealed to be incorrect as neither the dates nor the style fit this geographic attribution. It is much more likely that the painting originates from a mid-15th century Tuscan painter. The fusion of different painting styles is obvious in this work: besides Late Gothic elements it reveals an affinity with Florentine and Sienese Painting and signs of Early Renaissance (a bold blend of Lorenzo Monaco, Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, Taddeo di Bartolo, Sassetta, Masolino and Gentile da Fabriano, Gherardo Starnina and Battista di Gerio) but is also reminiscent of the Spanish style. This led to the assumption that the work may have been created by the Portuguese artist Alvaro Pirez de Evora, who, according to Vasari, frequented the workshops of Taddeo di Bartolo in Siena at the start of the century and was later (ca. 1420 - 1440) active in Tuscany.
The present painting shows a striking similarity with other known works by Pirez. It was in all likelihood intended as an altar wing for a private chapel of an aristocratic family.
This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
