Der Maler war überwiegend im Piemont sowie in Turin tätig und stand unter dem Einfluss von Pellegrini und Ricci, aber auch von Giuseppe Maria Crespi. Man kann ihn zu Recht als einen der bedeutensten Rokoko-Maler Norditaliens ansehen.
Der mythologische Gegenstand wurde im vorliegenden Gemälde ganz dem Zeitgeist entsprechend in einer Art Vision wiedergegeben, in dem die Göttin Venus nicht wie in früheren Stilperioden real in der Schmiede des Vulkans erscheint, sondern auf Wolken sitzend, umgeben von Amoretten, während sie auf den links in einem irdischen Bereich sitzenden Vulkan deutet, der ihr entgegenblickt mit Hammer in der Rechten sowie einem großen Schild an den roten Mantel gelehnt. Rechts hinten ebenfalls in diesigen Wolken eine Gespielin der Liebesgöttin. Die Charakterisierung der beiden ungleichen Götter geschieht auch hier durch ein kräftiges rot im Mantel des Vulkan und im Gegensatz dazu einem lichten, aquamarinfarbenen Kleid der Venus. Der Bildaufbau lässt sich bereits mit dem Werk des Tiepolo vergleichen. Die Ausführung der Körperlichkeit jedoch noch sehr feinmalerisch.

The painter was predominately active in Piedmont and Turin. With great justice, the artist can be regarded as one of the great Rococo painters of Northern Italy. The mythological subject was depicted like a vision, entirely in correspondence with the spirit of the Rococo age. The composition of the painting can already be compared to works of Tiepolo whereas the finish of the physiques is still executed in detailed “fine painting”.
