Giovanni Battista Crosato,
circa 1697 Venice – 1756
VENUS AT VULCAN’S FORGE
Oil on panel.
46 x 65 cm.
The painter was predominately active in Piedmont and Turin. With great justice, the artist can be regarded as one of the great Rococo painters of Northern Italy. The mythological subject was depicted like a vision, entirely in correspondence with the spirit of the Rococo age. The composition of the painting can already be compared to works of Tiepolo whereas the finish of the physiques is still executed in detailed “fine painting”.
Literature:
Illustrated and documented in Denis Ton, Giambattista Crosato Pittore del rococò europeo, Fondazione Giorgio Gini, Scripta edizioni, ill. 53.
