Das querrechteckige, zu den Seiten hin abgerundete Gemälde zeigt den kleinen Jesusknaben schlafend auf seinen Marterwerkzeugen, darunter Hammer, Nägel, Kreuzbalken, Lanze und Essigschwamm. Die Bildkonturen werden umzogen von roten, roséfarbenen und weißen Rosen, die wohl die Heilige Jungfrau, die mystische Rose, symbolisieren und die auch als Vanitasmotive für die Vergänglichkeit gedeutet werden können.
