1868 hatte Bochmann ein Stipendium an der Düsseldorfer Akademie erhalten, dort besuchte er neben der Zeichen- und der Antikenklasse ein halbes Jahr die Landschaftsklasse von Oswald Achenbach bis dieser die Akademie verließ. Bereits 1871 gründete Bochmann ein eigenes Atelier in Düsseldorf und unternahm in der Folgezeit wiederholt Studienreisen nach Holland, Belgien und Estland, die Motive zu seinen Gemälden lieferten.
