Shozo Shimamoto,

Die Arbeit entstand als sogenannte Helicopter Performance - die zweite ihrer Art - während des Überfluges des Ortes Ronchi dei Legionari als Pre-Event für die Biennale von Venedig. Shimamoto führte vor allem in Italien zahlreiche Mal-Aktionen durch, bei denen er vom Hubschrauber aus große Flächen mit Farbe beschüttete.
Shimamoto zählt zu den wichtigsten japanischen Künstlern nach 1945. Zusammen mit Jiro Yoshihara gründete Shimamoto 1954 die Avantgarde-Gruppe Gutai, eine der wichtigsten Bewegungen der experimentellen Nachkriegskunst. Schon 1955 kam es zu Kontakten zwischen den Gutai-Künstlern und der deutschen ZERO-Gruppe.
1956 schoss Shimamoto zum ersten Mal mit einer Kanone Farbbeutel auf eine Malfläche. Er legte eine große Leinwand auf den Boden und warf mit Farbe gefüllte Glasflaschen gegen einen in der Mitte liegenden Stein. Diesen „bottle crash“ wiederholte er im Lauf der Jahre noch mehrmals. 1958 fand in New York die erste Gutai-Aussstellung statt.
Shimamoto verband Malerei, Musik und Aktion im Raum. Er bereitete der Fluxus-Bewegung den Boden und inspirierte Künstler wie Allan Kaprow und Nam June Paik. Er gilt auch als Pionier der Mail Art. 1986 reiste er durch Ost-und Westeuropa und ließ Botschaften auf seinen rasierten Schädel schreiben. Zehn Jahre später wurde er für seine pazifistischen Aktivitäten für den Friedensnobelpreis nominiert.

This work is the result of a so-called helicopter performance - the second of its kind - which the artist conducted during an overflight of the village Ronchi dei Legionari. Shimamoto mostly arranged his performances, such as throwing paint from a helicopter, in Italy.
Shimamoto is one of the most important Japanese artists of the post war period. Along with Jiro Yoshihara, he founded the avant-garde artist group Gutai in 1954, which is one of the influential artists’ movements after 1945. In1955, the Gutai-group made contact with the German group ZERO. In 1956, Shimamoto fired colour-filled bags with a canon onto a canvas for the very first time. He also threw colour-filled bottles against a stone lying in the center of a large canvas. “Bottle crash” was a performance he repeated several times in his artistic career. The first exhibition of the Gutai-group took place in New York in 1958.
Shimamoto combined painting, music and performance. He paved the way for the Fluxus movement and inspired artists such as Allan Kaprow and Nam June Paik. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of “Mail Art”. During his travels through Eastern and Western Europe in 1986, Shimamoto invited other artists to draw, write, or place objects on his shaved head. Ten years later he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his pacifist engagement.
