Dieser sitzt den Kopf schwer aufgestützt beim Schein einer Öllampe vor einem Buch und studiert dieses. Diese kleine, fein gemalte Genreszene ist sowohl in der feinen Ausführung als auch in dem Motiv des Fensterdurchblicks den Arbeiten von Gerard Dou verpflichtet, der als Begründer der Feinmalerei in Leiden gilt.
