Pair of maiolica Istoriato dishes
Diameter: 28 cm.
Castelli, 17th century.

Pair of flat dishes with Istoriato painting and tangerine border. One dish features Leda with the swan and a female companion by the waterside. They lean against each other and welcome the swan. Trees and classical architecture in the background. The other dish features Cupid with Venus who instructs Cupid how to fire arrows. In the forefront Cupid's quiver lies at the bottom of some steps. Cupid turns away from the beholder and leans against Venus, who is sitting on a rough seat, which has been arranged between the pedestals of two pillars. She looks down on Cupid holding the bow. Rocks, water and some distant buildings in the background. Painted in yellow, red, green, blue and black. Good condition. Upper rim restored.

Notes:
This type of painting suggests the workshops of the Grue or Gentili families.
