Rest. an Tülle, Öffnung.

Literatur:

Maiolica syrup jar
Height: 24.5 cm.
Diameter: 15.5 cm.
Montelupo, 16th century.

Syrup jar with conical body and slim cylindrical neck. The round spout is strongly protruding, stabilised by a rope-shaped bracket attached to the neck. The front is decorated with a broad scroll inscribed AP/I DI SALVIA, an ointment made from sage syrup. The scroll's ends are rolled up and shaded in green and yellow. The blue décor against a white ground comprises Persian palmettes and interspersed red rosettes. Painted in blue, yellow, green and tangerine against a white ground. Glazing chips along the rims, chips to the foot, the band around the spout and the lip. Neck and spout restored.

Literature:
For a comparable syrup jar without scroll and a two-handled vase, see Rainer G. Richter (ed.), Götter, Helden und Grotesken. Das Goldene Zeitalter der Majolika, Munich, 2006, pp. 84ff, nos 34, 35.
A syrup jar with very similar décor, see Giuliana Gardelli, Italika. maiolica Italiana del Rinascimento, Faenza, 1999, pp. 360ff, no. 160.
The fact that the painting matches, in part exactly, suggests that both jars were part of the same pharmacy inventory.
