Der virtuose Illustrator und Maler Friedrich Wahle schuf zahlreiche Vorlagen, die schon damals in Illustrierten und Kunstzeitschriften aber auch satyrischen Blättern wie „Die fliegenden Blätter“, „Simplicissimus“ etc. veröffentlicht wurden. Die damalige Reproduktionstechnik bevorzugte Vorlagen in Grisailletönen, was bei Wahle zu einem ausgeprägten, neuen Farbstil führte, bei dem die Farbigkeit sich auf wenige Grundfarben reduziert. Fast allen seinen Szenen ist ein humoristischer, literarischer Begleittext zuzuordnen, im Sinne der zeitgenössischen Gesellschaftskritik.
