Der König im reich dekorierten Harnisch mit Feldherrenstab auf einem steigenden Schimmel sitzend, in einer nach hinten abwärts verlaufenden Landschaft vor einer Küste mit Segelschiffen. Ihm folgen mehrere Landsknechte zu Fuß, auf dem Boden Kriegsutensilien, im Tal eine Festung und Stadt zu erkennen. Die Gesichtszüge in physiognomischer Ähnlichkeit zu dem bekannten Portrait des Philippe de Champaigne. An Zaumzeug und Satteldecke bekröntes bourbonisches Lilienwappen.

Portraits Ludwig XIII sind äußerst selten; ein ähnliches Gemälde um 1630 tauchte im Handel auf, Claude Deruet, 1588 - 1662, zug. (840541)
