In einem Innenraum der Zeit um 1800 mit Gemälden, Globus und einem Schreibtisch steht ein junger Herr mit verschränkten Armen und hochmütigem, herablassendem Blick, eine Frau in dunklem Kleid mit weißer Schürze betrachtend, die an einen Stuhl gelehnt kniet und in Reue versinkt. Die näheren Gründe der Reue und des Hochmutes hat der Maler im Bild leider nicht hinterlassen. Wahrscheinlich handelt es sich um die Wiedergabe einer Theaterszene der französischen Literatur.
