Felsige Baumlandschaft mit Eichen am Waldrand sowie einem Hohlweg, der nach unten verläuft. Darauf eine Hirtin mit Schafen, gefolgt von einem weiteren Hirten. Am Hang einige städtisch gekleidete Personen bei der Rast sitzend, in Begleitung eines Hundes. Schattiger, theatralisch beleuchteter Vordergrund, im Hintergrund Durchblick in helle, sonnige Landschaft mit aufziehenden Wolken und einem Flusstal. Das Gemälde ist in die mittlere Periode des Künstlerschaffens des Malers einzuordnen (um 1854/55), bevor der Maler unter den Einfluss von Corot gerät und sich der Schule von Barbizon annähert.
