Amphitrite war die Tochter des Nereus und der Doris und daher eine Meeresgöttin. Poseidon sah sie auf Naxos tanzen und verliebte sich in sie, doch suchte sie Schutz bei dem Titanen Atlas. Poseidon sandte, die ihm dienstbaren Geschöpfe des Meeres nach ihr aus, und schließlich entdeckte sie ein Delfin, der so beredt für Poseidon warb, dass sie ihn heiratete.
