Thomas Couture, 1815 Senlis - 1879 Velliers-le-Bel
DIE RÖMER DER VERFALLSZEIT Atelier-Öl-Skizze zu dem bekannten Monumentalgemälde im Museé d´Orsay, Paris, das Couture in Paris um 1847 in den Maßen 466 x 775 cm geschaffen hat. Dem Gemälde liegt eine Satire des antiken Dichters Juvenal zugrunde, in der es heißt: "Jetzt erleiden wir die Übel des langen Friedens; schlimmer als Waffen bedrängt uns der Überfluss und rächt den besiegten Erdkreis an uns." Die Darstellung dieses römischen Festgelages war in der Zeit um 1847 eine Kritik an der Politik Frankreichs. Öl/Lwd. 73 x 115 cm. Literatur: Katalog Louvre, Paris, 1958-61, Bd.
