Vor einer unebenen Felswand einer Grotte die vor einem Felsblock kniende Figur mit nacktem Oberkörper und emporgerichtetem Blick. Sein abgelegtes Kardinalsgewand weist den Dargestellten als Hieronymus aus, in seiner Hand ein Geißelungsstein, in der anderen ein offenes Buch, vor ihm eine Schriftrolle und ein Schädel. Der linke Hintergrund gibt einen Ausblick auf eine schroffhügelige Landschaft frei. Sowohl di Martino als auch Orlando bestätigen unabhängig voneinander die Autorschaft des genannten Künstlers.
Domenico Piola gilt als der vielleicht bedeutendste Genueser Maler seiner Zeit und erhielt aufgrund seines Erfolges einen großen Werkstattbetrieb, bekannt unter dem Begriff Casa Piola, in der mehrere Mitarbeiter wirkten. Zahlreiche Paläste und Villen in und um Genua verdanken ihre Ausstattung dieser Werkstatt. So stattete 1688 Piola zusammen mit Gregorio de Ferrari (1644-1726) die Räume des Palazzo Rosso in Genua aus, aus denen einige Werke sich heute im Britischen Museum befinden.
