Halb auf eine Steinplatte lehnend das Brustbildnis des Apostels Petrus mit auf eben dieser Steinplatten liegendem Schlüsselpaar - der eine für das irdische, der andere für das himmlische Reich -, das ihn attributiv bestimmt. Als absteigende Diagonale komponiert, der Mund leicht geöffnet, der glänzende Blick aus dem Bildfeld gerichtet, die Hände gefaltet. Wie auch Hendrick ter Brugghen, Dirck van Barburen und Theodor Rombouts, alles Utrechter Kollegen, wollte auch Hendrik Bloemaert offensichtlich das damals in Rom aufsehenerregende Werk Michelangelo Merisi il Caravaggios vor Ort kennenlernen. Die hier angebotene Petrusdarstellung könnte in Bloemaerts kurzer römischer Schaffensperiode entstanden sein, wofür auch die gewählte Farbigkeit spricht.

Vergleiche auch die Petrus-Darstellungen von Hendrick ter Brugghen „Der reuige Petrus“ von 1616 im Centraal Museum Utrecht, Inv.Nr. 15762 und Jusepe de Riberas „Der heilige Petrus“ von 1616 / 1620 in der Quadreria dei Girolamini in Neapel.
