Dem Gemälde ist eine ausführlich dokumentierte Expertise von Dr. Federica Spadotto, beigegeben, mit Vergleichsbeispielen und Literaturangaben, in Kopie vorliegend.
Das betont schlanke Hochformat findet sich im Werk des Malers mehrfach, resultierend aus dem Wunsch, wie hier zuweilen der Enge der Gassen der Stadt zu entsprechen. Das Bildformat lässt auch den im Hintergrund hochragenden, 1545 errichteten Campanile der Kirche San Sebastiano zur Geltung bringen. Im Vordergrund sind die Ufermauern eines Kanals des Sestiere Dorsoduro zu sehen, davor ein Fischer, der Kontakt mit einer Frau mit Kind am gegenüberliegenden Ufer hält. Weiter hinten auf dem kleinen Campiello weitere Bewohner des Viertels sowie ein Hündchen. Insgesamt beschreibt das Bild eine venezianische Idylle außerhalb der berühmten Stadtansichten, damals bei Sammlern und Reisenden sehr beliebt.
Chilone zählt in der venezianischen Vedutenmalerei zu den Nachfolgern Canalettos (1697-1768). Aus ärmlichen Verhältnissen hat er sich zwölfjährig mit der Herstellung von Seidenstrümpfen seinen Unterhalt verdient, bevor er in die Werkstatt des Francesco Battaglioli (1725-1796) kam, bei dem er sich die Kenntnisse der Vedutenmalerei aneignen konnte. Aus finanziellen Gründen verdingte er sich bei dem Bühnenmaler Alessandro Mauro. Mit ihm zusammen war er an der Ausschmückung mit Freskenarbeiten im Theater von Udine tätig, die von Giambattista Canal geleitet wurden. 1824 wurde er in die Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia aufgenommen. Obwohl vom Adel gefördert, verstarb Chilone verarmt. A.R.
