Bronze mit dunkler Patina. Als Sohn einer verarmten Holzschnitzerfamilie wurde Vincenzo ausgesetzt und von einem kunstinteressierten Paar adoptiert. Bereits vor seinem 10. Lebensjahr arbeitete er im Bildhauerstudio von Emanuele Caggiano, später bei Stanislas Lista und schon 12-jährig ging er in die Akademie von Neapel und war anschließend lebenslang befreundet mit dem Maler Antonio Mancini. König Victor Emmanuel II ließ sein Werk permanent im Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte ausstellen. 1877 zog Gemito nach Paris. Damit war sein weiterer Aufstieg begründet.
