Fattori, der ab 1895 Professor für Landschaftsmalerei an der Accademia di Belle Arti in Florenz war, war auf bäuerliche Szenen spezialisiert. Hier jedoch zeigt er zwei Pferde mit einem Soldaten inmitten eines weiten Feldes, wobei auf der Hügelkette hinter ihm Objekte auszumachen sind, die zunächst wie eine Baumgruppe erscheinen und erst beim näheren Hinsehen erkennen lassen, dass es sich um weitere Soldaten handelt. Minimal besch.
