Von einer felsigen Anhöhe in einen gewundenen Weg ins Tal ziehende Hirten mit Maultierkarren und Eseln sowie einer Ziegenherde. Die Szenerie seitlich gerahmt durch einen hochragenden Baum links sowie einen rechts hochsteigenden Felsen mit Wurzeln und Sträuchern bewachsen. Weiter unten im Tal auf grünen Matten zwischen einem Laubwäldchen antikische Gebäude mit Zinnentürmen vor abfallender Bergkette. Der Himmel mit nach links ziehenden Wolken, belichtet durch die sinkende Sonne zwischen hellen Wolkenstreifen. Lebendige Wiedergabe des bewegten Sujets. Auffallend die aus dem französischen Rokoko herzuleitende Farbigkeit und Bewegtheit der Vegetation sowie der leuchtenden Textilien, was auf einen Einfluss durch die Malerei im Umkreis von Boucher hinweist.
