Leicht nach links gewandtes Hüftportrait der Isabella mit schwarzem Seidenkleid und aufwendigen großen Goldknöpfen und Goldapplikationen. Über dem Kleid ein Umhang mit exzellent ausgeführter stofflicher Lichtregie. Mühlsteinkragen und Manschetten in aufwendig gearbeiter Spitze, im Haar goldener Schmuck, die Ohren mit Barockperlohringen, über dem Kleid eine zweireihige Kette aus großen Perlen; die Kette in einem repräsentativen Schmuckanhänger endend, dessen Zentrum von einem beeindruckenden Smaragd hervorgehoben wird mit darunter hängender Barockperle. Handschuhe liegen in ihrer Linken, während ihre rechte Hand auf einem Armlehnstuhl liegt. Der Hintergrund mit Vorhangdraperie.
Während seines Madrid-Aufenthaltes schuf Rubens mehrere Bildnisse der königlichen Familie. Das Portrait der Isabella von Bourbon (1602-1644), der ersten Gemahlin König Philipps IV, von Spanien, Tochter König Heinrichs IV von Frankreich und der Maria de Medici, entstand zunächst in zwei Fassungen, die in einer ganzen Reihe von Fassungen mit mehr oder weniger starker Beteiligung der Werkstatt des Rubens überliefert sind.

During his stay in Madrid, Rubens painted several portraits of the royal family. The portrait of Isabella of Bourbon (1602 - 1644), the first wife of Philip IV, King of Spain, daughter of King Henry IV of France and Maria de Medici, was initially created in two versions, which have survived in a whole series of versions with varying degrees of contribution by Rubens’ workshop.
