Der Blick aus der Grotte auf eine Felsformation und auch die festländischen Standardmaße legen nahe, dass das Gemälde nicht in England selbst, wo Luny 1780 sein eigenes Atelier bezog, entstanden sein mag, sondern vielleicht auf einer seiner zahlreichen Reisen, die durch seinen engen Kontakt zur East India Company möglich wurden und ihn nach Neapel und Gibraltar bis hin zu Charleston in South Carlolina führten.
