Nach der Legende trachtete die zyprische Königstochter nach einer Vermählung mit einem Mann, der ihr an Adel, Reichtum, Schönheit und Weisheit gleichkam. Von einem Eremiten auf Jesus Christus als den einzig richtigen Bräutigam verwiesen und getauft, erlebt sie in einer Traumvision, wie der Christusknabe ihr einen Ring an den Finger steckt. Genau diese Situation wird hier bildnerisch wiedergegeben, indem die rechten zwei Drittel des Gemäldes von Maria das Jesuskind haltend dominiert werden, während links am Rand Katharina, erkenntlich auch an dem ihr attributiv zukommenden Rad, dargestellt wird mit erhobenem Zeigefinger, auf welchen das Jesuskind den Ring steckt. .
