Die hier angebotene Darstellung in teils golddekoriertem Alabaster geht auf die Marmorskulptur „Madonna von Trapani“ in Santissima Annunziata, Trapani zurück, die 172 cm misst und wohl von einem Nachfolger von Nino Pisano (1315-1368?) stammt. Vermutlich wurde sie von einem auf Zypern tätigen Meister Pisanischer Herkunft gefertigt. Die wundertätige Skulptur war sehr beliebt in Trapani und wurde in Marmor und Alabaster im späten Mittelalter und später wiederholt sowohl für die private Andacht als auch etwa für die Kathedrale von Palermo. Auch als Patronin der Seefahrer ist dieser Typus beliebt – wurde die Marmorskulptur in Trapani doch – so sagt man – im Meer gefunden, nachdem sie aufgrund heftigen Seeganges von den Transporteuren der Figur in das Meer geworfen wurde. Die Figur wurde unter anderem von Francesco Laurana und Domenico Gagini wiederholt.

The sculpture on offer for sale in this lot in parcel-gilt alabaster draws on a marble sculpture titled “Madonna of Trapani” in the Santissima Annunziata, Trapani, which measures 172 cm and was probably created by a follower of Nino Pisano (1315-1368?). It is likely that it was made by a master of Pisan origin active in Cyprus. Among others, the figure was repeated by Francesco Laurana and Domenico Gagini.
