Entsprechend den Mittleilungen, die wir über die Aufenthalte des Malers außerhalb seiner Heimat sowie seiner Reisen haben, dürfte das Gemälde um 1597 entstanden sein. Damit ist die Bedeutung des Werkes in zweierlei Hinsicht zu sehen: einmal haben wir mit dem Bild eines der sehr frühen Venedig-Ansichten, weit vor der erst ein Jahrhundert später erfolgten breiten Hinwendung zu diesem Thema. Zum anderen handelt es sich hier um eines der ganz wenigen Gemälde, die der Maler in Italien gefertigt hat, etwa neben dem „Fest in einer italienischen Villa“ (Statens Museum for Kunst, Kopenhagen).
Der große Platz, ist aus leicht erhöhter Kavaliersperspektive gesehen, hinten abgeschlossen von der Kuppelbasilika di San Marco, dem danebenstehenden Campanile sowie der rechts nach hinten ziehenden Biblioteca, deren obere Loggien mit schaulustigem Publikum gefüllt sind. Links der berühmte Uhrturm. Auf dem weiten Platz wird ein Stierkampf abgehalten, mit rot gekleideten Speerträgern, dazwischen ein Jagdhund. Rechts, auf einem erhöhten Podium eine Commedia dell‘Arte-Aufführung, von Zuschauern umringt. Auch weiter hinten drängen sich mehrere Gruppen des Festpublikums. Von besonderem Interesse sind die Figuren im Vordergrund, überwiegend höfische Gesellschaft in festlichen Kostümen, dazwischen Harlekine, die ihre Akrobatik vorführen.
Mit dieser Darstellung besteht allergrößte Ähnlichkeit zu dem Gemälde „Plünderung einer Stadt“, das sich im schwedischen Gothenburg Museum of Art befindet. Auch dort lässt Vrancx zahllose Kämpfer mit Speeren auf weiter Fläche kämpfen, in ganz ähnlicher kompositioneller Auffassung.
